Celtic attempted to sign Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull in the past, but he failed a medical so the deal was stopped last minute. However it looks like the Hoops are planning a new bid to bring the player to Parkhead.
According to Football Insider, the club made a £3.25m offer which was accepted by their fellow Scottish side, and this time they will submit a £3 million bid for the 20 year-old. However they are nervous about making a bigger bid for the player due to the fact he hasn’t fully recovered from a knee injury yet.
For Motherwell, Turnbull has only managed two appearances this term, but they did come in the last three fixtures before the postponement of football, per Transfermarkt. He clearly was still on the mend at this time as he only 36 minutes in total.
Turnbull’s knee injury was suffered in July 2019, and it took him 237 days to recover (24th February 2020). Football being postponed has not helped the player, he was just getting back on his feet having lacked match sharpness but his progress was halted.
However if he can recover from his biggest ever injury, he is definitely a player with huge amounts of potential. Indeed he has played 36 times for Motherwell in the centre of midfield in all competitions, scoring 15 goals and picking up seven assists, per Transfermarkt.
His potential has also been noticed by his nation Scotland as he has made two appearances for the U21 side. If the Hoops can acquire him for around £3 million, they have enough quality centre midfielders to be able to bring the player into the side gently, and he would certainly add more depth to the side which will be vital as they bid for 10 league titles in a row next term.
Ryan Christie and Callum McGregor would likely be ahead of him in the pecking order and are both still 26 years-old and younger so he would have battle for his place, but the move definitely looks like a decent idea for the Hoops.
