Celtic recently announced that Jozo Simunovic and Jonny Hayes had left the club following their contracts expiring. Craig Gordon’s contract also expired, but it seems like negotiations are still ongoing for him to stay at the club and former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has been discussing the goalkeeper’s future.
However, he has had to settle for a place on the bench of late and now it is being reported that St.Mirren have contacted the player about signing for them and have offered him a contract, via the Scottish Sun.
Speaking to Football Insider about this deal and his future, Whelan said, “Well of course. Any player coming to the end of their career, even myself, even when I retired I wanted to come back.
“I tried a couple of times but injury stopped me. Your head says yes but your body very quickly tells you no. You’ve got to come terms with that and sometimes that is difficult to come to terms with, that you’ll never play again.
“Maybe he wants to string it out as long as he can. If something’s on the table and you feel like you’ve still got something to offer, then why not? But you’ve got to understand that football takes a lot out of your body.
He’s played for a number of years, thrown himself to the ground, taken knocks, you’ve got to be honest with yourself, can you still do it?
“Maybe he’s weighing up options and that is a good option. It’s not far from Glasgow, St Mirren, so it’s a possibility there that club and player can maybe squeeze that last bit of juice out of him.”
With Football Insider also reporting the Celtic have offered the Scottish international a contract as they look to keep him at the club, Whelan makes points of which some are hard to disagree with, whereas others are not.
With the Hoops only having one goalkeeper on their books at this current time, (Scott Bain) as Fraser Forster has returned to Southampton, if Gordon still feels like he has something to offer, there is currently the opportunity for him to do it at the Hoops, however if he cannot be promised consistent football he might want to look elsewhere like Whelan says.
It is good to see him still succeeding at such an age, and he can continue to do this at the Bhoys, no matter whether he starts or not, he can still win medals with the club.
However, Football Insider did also reveal that Gordon is desperate to play more football, and this is something that can definitely be promised right now more at St.Mirren, so like Whelan says it could be the ideal place to get the last bit of game time out of the goalkeeper.
These negotiations look like they could continue for a while, but if he does leave the Hoops, they will have lost a real asset as he is a very experienced head with a lot of quality, which could be crucial for next season.
