Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard has been watched by scouts from Borussia Dortmund and the Bundesliga club have identified him as a potential signing.
However, Sky.de added that the Bundesliga club have not made contact with any of Edouard’s representatives, with Bielefeld claiming that the striker’s focus is to “play a good season at Celtic” and that a mid-season move is out of the question.
Borussia Dortmund’s reported interest in the player is just the latest signal of intent from a variety of clubs around Europe in potentially prying Edouard from Celtic.
Football Insider recently claimed that Lyon were plotting regular scouting trips to monitor the striker with an eye to a possible move which would replicate that of Moussa Dembele, who left the Hoops for the Ligue 1 club last year.
With the transfer windows in France and Germany not reopening until January, there is a strong chance that more clubs will express an interest in Edouard before then, especially if he maintains his current scoring form.
He had scored six goals in his first 13 matches this season prior to the double he notched against Kilmarnock last Sunday, the fourth league match out of five in which he has found the net. Nor is his form a bolt from the blue – he was Celtic’s top scorer last season with 22 goals in all competitions.
He also carried over his club form onto the international stage this month, beginning his France under-21 career in memorable fashion with four goals in his first two appearances as he hit doubles against Albania (as per The Scottish Sun) and Czech Republic (as per the Daily Record).
Although Edouard and his agent have given their word that they are committed to Celtic for this season, as reported by Sky.de, the Hoops’ failure to reach the Champions League group stage could tip the scales towards a team like Borussia Dortmund and Lyon, both of whom are playing at that level.
At least the striker’s reported desire to focus on Celtic for the remainder of this campaign means that the Scottish champions should be able to enjoy his goalscoring talents for another few months.
Also, the Hoops have been down this road before with Lyon tempting Dembele away from the club, but Edouard’s excellent form in front goal meant that his France under-21 colleague has not been terribly missed, so the advances of Borussia Dortmund and Lyon now should give Celtic adequate time to line up a possible replacement if Edouard is lured to another European league next year.
