Celtic could face a battle to keep hold of star striker Odsonne Edouard over the coming months after the 21-year-old indicated that he may be open to moving on from the club.
The news comes just a week after Football Insider had reported that Celtic had been planning to give Edouard an improved deal of £30,000 per week in an attempt to persuade him to stay at the club.
Edouard has been in magnificent scoring form for Celtic over the last number of months, his 22 goals in 2018/19 making him the club’s top scorer for the season and nine more to his name so far in the current campaign.
It isn’t just at club level that the striker is excelling, either – his first four caps for the France Under-21s have yielded nine goals, scoring a hat-trick against Slovakia during the week after netting doubles in each of his other caps since making his debut only last month. [via TransferMarkt]
He has already been the subject of interest from a number of clubs around Europe, with Lyon reportedly keeping tabs on the 21-year-old [via Football Insider], Napoli prepared to pay £30m for his services [via Daily Mail] and Borussia Dortmund sending scouts to watch him [as per Sky.de‘s Man Bielefeld, via Sport Witness).
Edouard has only played two Champions League group games back in 2017, with Celtic losing out in the qualifying rounds in both subsequent seasons, and he could well look at how fellow countryman and former Hoops team-mate Moussa Dembele has performed since moving to Lyon in August 2018.
The 23-year-old has struck 26 goals in 56 appearances for the Ligue 1 club in that time, including six in his first eight league games this season, and has been playing regularly in the Champions League group stage.
The more that Edouard keeps scoring for club and country, the likelier it seems that clubs from the continent will be keen to make an offer that neither he nor Celtic could refuse.
The 21-year-old can’t be blamed for having lofty ambitions, having proven himself in Scotland, and it would be understandable if he wanted to follow in Dembele’s footsteps and secure a move to a club playing regularly in the Champions League proper.
Celtic fans, do you think it’s likely that Edouard will leave the club in a lucrative deal next year? Share your views in the comments section below!
