Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard has been told by his representatives that he could use this season’s Europa League as a platform for attracting attention from Europe’s elite clubs.
Football Insider reported that the player’s camp, led by his agent, advised him that he could earn a move to one of the continent’s leading names if he excels for the Hoops in European competition this season.
Last week, Football Insider claimed that Lyon were planning regular scouting missions of Edouard with an eye to a possible move for the 21-year-old.
He scored twice on his France under-21 debut against Albania earlier this month, as reported by The Scottish Sun, and followed up with two more goals for the team against Czech Republic a few days later, as noted by the Daily Record.
So far, he has 39 goals and 17 assists in 93 appearances for the Hoops, which works out at 0.42 goals and 0.18 assists per game.
Edouard is not the only young French striker to have impressed at Celtic in recent times – Moussa Dembele was prolific for the club before his £19.7m move to Lyon last year.
The 23-year-old scored 51 times and supplied 18 assists in 94 games for the Hoops, a return of 0.54 goals and 0.19 assists per game.
Prior to leaving Celtic last August, he had 12 caps for France under-21s in nearly two years. In the subsequent 13 months, he has added a further 11 caps for Les Bleus’ junior side. [via TransferMarkt.co.uk]
On the European stage last season, Edouard scored twice for Celtic in 552 minutes across eight Europa League games, averaging a goal per 276 minutes. Dembele scored once for Lyon in 296 minutes of Champions League action.
Edouard might look at how magnificently Dembele has been performing for Lyon and feel that he could do likewise at a club competing in the Champions League group stage, as the Ligue 1 side are this season.
He may also look at how other players have gone on to bigger things after leaving Celtic – former Hoops defender Virgil van Dijk won the Champions League and was named UEFA Men’s Player of the Year for 2018/19.
By next summer, Edouard will be 22, the same age Dembele was when he left Celtic for Lyon. A prolific scoring spell in the Europa League, coupled with the maintenance of his current domestic and international form, could make it increasingly difficult for the Hoops to keep hold of their in-form striker.
