Tom Leighton is not a household name in either Scotland or England as of yet. Indeed, the young defender came through the ranks in Motherwell’s academy set-up before leaving for Watford in 2017, where he has continued to develop. The central-defender is now 18-years-old and could be a future star at Parkhead, so the Hoops need to act fast.
The reports linking the young defender with a move to the club come from reports via The Daily Record, and they are a reason to get excited. In the same report, it is reiterated that Brendan Rodgers is set to allow Filip Benkovic to go back on-loan to Parkhead next summer, and that means that Leighton, should he be set to swap Watford for Glasgow, could be learning from one of the best defenders in Scotland next year.
Leighton may not look like a signing who will come in at the age of just 18-years-old and start playing senior football, but stranger things have happened. The youngster will have turned 19 by the start of the 2019/20 season and with Dedryck Boyata’s contract up this summer, the teenage Watford man could be one of those called upon to help plug the gap left by the Belgian.
It will certainly be tough for Celtic to go forward without Boyata, but it won’t be impossible. The Bhoys have got the strongest squad in Scottish football at the moment and with new additions, their position will get stronger. All that they need is for a few younger faces to start coming in to replace the old guard, and Tom Leighton should be the first young starlet to be signed under that philosophy.
It helps that the 18-year-old is apparently keen on a return to Scottish football after he left Motherwell for Watford, and that decision indicates that he’s keen on getting on the ladder in senior football. Making a name for himself north of the border would be a smart move too as if he impresses it could open up a return to playing the senior game back in the Premier League later in his career.
Bhoys, would you be on board with this move? Join the discussion by commenting below…
