Celtic: Sending Mikey Johnston to Greece on loan would be catastrophic for Parkhead

Frankly, rumours of a loan move to Panathinaikos for a certain Mikey Johnston, that have surfaced via The Scottish Sun, are absolutely ludicrous.

The previous season has been a solid one for young Johnston. The 20-year-old has had a good amount of game time for the Scottish champions, scoring five goals and grabbing one assist in 23 games, although a lot of those have come from the bench as he only started 11 times, stats via Transfermarkt.

Those numbers should only improve too over the next few seasons, as Neil Lennon really started to take a shine to the youngster, and it paid off too as the Scottish wide-man bagged twice on the final day of the season against Hearts, which coincidentally was his first full 90 minutes of the season.

Should the young winger remain at Parkhead and avoid the touted one-year loan it would bring a massive sigh of relief to the Bhoys. There promises to be a number of changes at Parkhead over the next few seasons as the old guard will need to be moved along, and keeping the young guns progressing through will be absolutely key.

On that previous note, we’ve already seen Mikael Lustig sign for Gent, as per BBC, and with ageing players like Scott Brown (33), Johnny Hayes (31) and Scott Sinclair (30), changes will have to come. Mikey Johnston isn’t one of those needed changes, though, so to see the youngster leave would be a massive slap in the face for Celtic fans, as at his young age he could be a real star for the Hoops.
