Moussa Dembele’s exit at Parkhead left a serious gap. That much, Celtic fans, we all know is obvious. Odsonne Edouard has been fighting to plug the void, but his 21 goals in 51 games haven’t been enough and with Leigh Griffiths on leave and Timothy Weah’s loan come and gone, summer cannot come soon enough.
No one is hiding the fact that one of Scotland’s brightest young goalscorers is available on a free this summer, and whilst Neil Lennon won’t be able to sign him up in time for the Scottish Cup final, Lawrence Shankland must be a high priority at Parkhead. The 23-year-old has goals aplenty to his name, and as he leaves Ayr United the youngster is in very high demand, with Celtic registering (as per the Chronicle) an interest.
We know that you won’t admit it, and don’t have a go at us, but Rangers are on the rise. Steven Gerrard may not have the Gers competing for the title next season but soon enough they’ll be fighting for silverware, and what better way to quash them than by beating them to the signing of a striker who can lead the line for the next ten years? Lennon will need to be quick, though, as both sides of the Old Firm are after the Ayr United man.
Back in January, Swansea City had a bid turned down for the young goal machine, and with Sunderland holding a long-standing interest in Shankland, Celtic will need to swiftly get their act together if they’re to sign the man to truly fill the goalscoring void that Dembele left with his summer exit to Lyon. If anything, the Honest Men’s star man could better Dembele’s numbers.
All it takes is a quick look at his output this season and last. Shankland has found the back of the net 61 times in 73 games. If that’s not impressive enough he’s also laid on 24 assists for teammates, and if the Parkhead faithful want to crack Europe and continue dominating the domestic scene, it looks like bringing Shankland to Glasgow is the smart move, it’s now up to Lennon to see it.
Celtic fans, would you be happy with Shankland? Let us know!
