According to a recent report from The Belfast Telegraph, Rangers have been linked with a January move for midfielder Adam Lallana. The 30-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League leaders Liverpool and has done so since leaving Southampton back in 2014, although struggles for regular game time under manager Jurgen Klopp this season has plunged his future at Anfield into huge doubt.
And reports suggest that Steven Gerrard’s Rangers are eyeing up a January move for the £13.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), as should Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic if they are to indeed fend off the Gers and win the Scottish Premiership title for an eighth season in a row this time round.
Ultimately, there looks set to be an exciting title race in Scotland in the second half of the season given the Old Firm rivals are currently level on points at the summit of the table, with Rangers’ narrow 1-0 success over the Bhoys last month very much underlining their title credentials.
And with additions in the form of Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis this month, Gerrard has already markedly improved his squad ahead of the second half of the season, with both men bringing vast amounts of experience but also genuine quality to a Light Blues team that have lost just one of their last 14 league matches.
As such, it is up to Rodgers and Celtic to respond with ambitious signings of their own this month, and with Rangers seemingly keen on Lallana, the Bhoys must seek to join and indeed win the race for the supremely talented 30-year-old in a bid to fend off their bitter rivals in pursuit of the title.
Lallana may have seriously struggled for regular football under Klopp this season with only six Premier League appearances to his name so far, but one mustn’t forget just how influential he has been for Liverpool down the years, thus following on from his incredibly impressive spell at Southampton having come up through the ranks at St Mary’s.
In fact, the midfielder was arguably one of Liverpool’s most valuable assets in the 2016/17 season as the Reds returned to the Champions League in finishing fourth in the Premier League table – at the time, Lallana was vital for both club and indeed country.
Yes, injuries have certainly scuppered the 30-year-old since then, but regular football might just be what’s needed for him to get back to his best form – and there’s little doubting that his best form would see him light up the Scottish Premiership.
And that is why Celtic simply have to beat Rangers to his signature, as the Gers are already very much in the title race alongside the Bhoys this term, and adding Lallana to their ranks is only going to strengthen them for the run-in – the fact they have no European commitments either can only aid in keeping the squad fresh.
Ultimately, Rodgers has signed Lallana before in being the man to lure him to Anfield back in 2014, and as such knows exactly how talented he is and thus how much of an asset he could be to his Celtic team this season.
But with Rangers seemingly keen on the midfielder, the Bhoys have to join and indeed win the race for the 30-year-old – doing so would all but seal the Scottish Premiership title for Rodgers’ side.
