Mbwana Samatta can win Celtic their toughest league yet

Mbwana Samatta can win Celtic their toughest league yet - Celtic

Brendan Rodgers suffered his first Old Firm derby defeat as manager of Celtic at the weekend.

The Hoops looked completely off the pace against Steven Gerrard’s men who rightly took home all three points thanks to Ryan Jack’s 30th-minute strike. Rodgers fielded Callum McGregor at left-back in the absence of Kieran Tierney and struggled to gain a foothold in the middle as a result. Without Odsonne Edouard in the attack, Celtic looked toothless.

Young Mikey Johnston has performed admirably in the absence of the Frenchman in recent weeks but looked out his depth against the Gers. Rangers moved level on points with their rivals as a result of the victory though Celtic have a game in hand. With the transfer window now open, it’s essential that Rodgers bolsters his attacking options.

One man he could look to lure to Celtic Park is Genk attacker – Mbwana Samatta. Valued at £5.85m by Transfermarkt, the 26-year-old has gone from strength-to-strength since moving to Belgium back in 2016. After netting just four goals in the league last season, Samatta has truly taken his game to the next level in the current campaign and has been scoring for fun.

The Tanzania international has lit up the Belgium Pro League, scoring 15 goals in just 20 appearances. Samatta has also been tormenting defences in Europe, finding the back of the net nine times during Genk’s Europa League campaign. Blessed with terrific pace and excellent finishing skills, the forward would be an instant hit with the Celtic Park faithful.

Should his impressive showings continue, it won’t be long before Premier League clubs come calling for his signature. Celtic should aim to beat them to the punch to ease their shortage of attacking depth in January.
