Back in the summer of 2016, Celtic signed Costa Rica international Cristian Gamboa from West Bromwich Albion for £1.08m, per Transfermarkt. Albeit with the benefit of hindsight, it’s a move which has since proven to be rather ill-judged.
Even though he did win eight trophies with the Celts, including three Premiership titles during his three seasons at the club, the right-back only managed 31 appearances in all competitions, with the majority coming in his first season in Glasgow.
From 2017/18 onward he only made 11 appearances for the Hoops, with former manager Brendan Rodgers seeming to have made up his mind that the Costa Rica defender was not good enough to be in the starting XI.
From that moment it seemed that they needed to move him on and Gamboa ended up moving to VFL Bochum in 2019 on a free transfer. Sadly for both the club and the player the move really didn’t work out, and it is easy to see why he left the Hoops with minimal fanfare.
