This article forms part of our Total Duds feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how bad a deal the club got.
Back in January 2018, Celtic signed defender Marvin Compper from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig for £1.03 million, per Transfermarkt. What looked at the time to be a good move for all involved turned into a total disaster, and a year and a half later the centre-back was released. His career at the Celts ended up being a complete waste of time and money and Compper was a total dud.
What was so crazy about the player’s time at the Hoops was the fact that in the year and a half that he was there, he only managed one appearance, against Morton in the Scottish Cup in 2018. In this performance, he didn’t even manage to last the whole game, as he was substituted in the 82nd minute, via thecelticstar. He ended up leaving the Scottish side on a free transfer to 3. Bundesliga side MSV Duisburg in July 2019.
Was Compper Celtic's worst ever signing?
One reason for his lack of game time was due to injury issues, as the defender had calf problems throughout the first eight months of his career at the Scottish club, per Transfermarkt. This meant he missed 31 games before he even attempted to kick a ball for the Hoops. Former Celts star Kris Commons discussed the issue 17 days after the player signed, as he said, via BBC Sport, “I just thought it was a higher risk bringing in a 32-year-old defender who is not going to play in Europe this season and who has been injury prone”, whilst he also called the transfer “baffling”.
It looked like the signing in the first place was a risk to club attempted to take, and it might make them think differently about future signings as the risk did not pay off.
Being discussed as a confusing signing two weeks into making the move, along with the fact he only played one game and cost over a million before leaving for nothing highlights that Compper was a total dud for the Hoops.
