Celtic midfielder Tom Rogic took another step in his return from injury with a full ninety minute outing against Ross County on Saturday, but the mixed verdict of his game by The Herald was unjustified.
Rogic missed the opening four weeks of the 2019/20 campaign with a knee injury, before earning 29 minutes from the bench in cameo appearances against Hamilton Academical and Kilmarnock (TransferMarkt).
Injuries were a regular gripe of the Australian’s game last season, too, as the 46-cap Socceroo midfielder missed ten Scottish Premiership fixtures, after being forced to undergo surgery on his knee following a blow sustained in January.
He only featured for a full ninety minutes on five occasions last term, as well, with his last full-game appearance coming on Boxing Day 2018 away to Aberdeen in a match the Hoops would win 4-3.
Saturday’s encounter with Ross County was another goal-fest for Celtic, as Neil Lennon’s side struck the back of the net six times to secure their return to the top of the Premiership standings. But while the day was a high for the Hoops, The Herald have suggested Rogic’s display was one of the worst from those who started for the winning side.
They claim the 26-year-old showed some nice touches in the absence of the suspended Ryan Christie and particularly lauded his pass that sent Vakoun Bayo through on goal in the closing stages.
However, Rogic’s lack of game time saw that his rating was low, despite the 6 ft 1 attacking midfielder operating in a congested part of the pitch, hassling the Ross County backline and delivering teasing balls into the box.
Rogic was not alone in being rated lowly for his efforts against Ross County, though, as Fraser Forster, Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo, Scott Brown and Callum McGregor were also only awarded a six out of ten for their efforts.
The Herald had nothing negative to say about Forster’s display between the sticks but marked him low as the Southampton loanee was rarely called into action even though he stood up to the task when called upon.
Bolingoli-Mbombo was lauded for never being troubled by the Ross County forwards, while Brown was acknowledged for sweeping up any danger, on a day those involved in the scoring earned the applause.
Should Celtic re-sign Victor Wanyama?
