Celtic’s Mikael Lustig admits having talks with Neil Lennon about his future

Although things have been largely the same for Celtic following the departure of Brendan Rodgers and the arrival of Neil Lennon, there will still be some questions lingering around Celtic Park regarding the futures of some of their staff.

One man that has had his future questioned recently is Mikael Lustig as the Sweden international’s contract is set to expire in the summer and there has been no suggestion that a new deal is presently on the table for him.

However, the right-back has revealed that discussions have taken place between him and the interim manager.

What’s the News?

Talking to Celtic View (via HITC Sport), Lustig admitted they had spoken about his present situation and what may happen in the summer.

“Neil and I talked together shortly after he returned,” he said. “We discussed a little bit about my situation and about what might happen next year. We’re both in a situation where we don’t know what the future holds come the summer.

“You naturally want to know what the future holds but in football that’s not always the case and I’m used to that. I’ve been here for a long time and I’ve loved every second of my time here.”

The Verdict:

Lustig’s future at the club is certainly in doubt and it would not be surprising if he were not offered a new deal to remain in Glasgow beyond the summer.

Although the Sweden international has been a key figure for the Bhoys over the years, his form and performances have significantly dipped over the course of the current season and the arrivals of Jeremy Toljan and Manny Perez would not have helped his chances of remaining at the club.

The 32-year-old has been in poor form for the Hoops and although he has the ability to put in a solid display on his day, he has too many showings that are just not great and has become a player the Scottish Premiership champions can no longer simply rely on.

In some matches, Lustig looks to have been identified by some of Celtic’s opponents as a possible weak link in the side and an area that is worth trying to exploit as his tackling has been far from its best this season.

Having made just two appearances for the side since Lennon took over from Rodgers, which includes playing the final four minutes of their Scottish Premiership match against Heart of Midlothian from the substitutes bench, things really don’t look too bright for the Swede.

Celtic fans, do you think Lustig will get a contract extension or do you believe he will be on his way out of Celtic Park in the summer? Join in with the discussion by sharing your thoughts below.
