Filip Benkovic reveals delight at Celtic move

Celtic finally managed to bring a centre-back to Parkhead on transfer deadline day last week in Filip Benkovic.

And, according to a report by The Daily Record, the Leicester City defender is delighted to have made the move across the border, just three weeks after joining the Foxes in a £13million deal.

The Croatian enforcer has revealed that he had asked for a loan move away from the King Power Stadium after it became clear that Harry Maguire would be staying and has stated that the Bhoys was the best option for him to continue his development.

Despite being pleased with the move to Celtic, Benkovic did also reveal Leicester could recall him in the winter, should they have any injury concerns of their own to deal with.

“I want to play as much as possible, so a season-long loan with Celtic was agreed and Leicester has the option of recalling me in the winter,” he told the Daily Record.

“There were other loan options – clubs in Italy, Spain and Germany, but I just wanted to go to Celtic.

“I think this is the best option for me for preparing for football in England and their Premier League – that’s why I am delighted to go to Celtic.

“Because Leicester didn’t sell Harry Maguire, I knew this would be what happened to me. Going to Celtic gives me up to a year to adapt to British football so I am looking at this loan very positively.”

The Verdict:

Celtic will be looking forward to how Benkovic performs for them this season and will be hoping that they can keep him for the whole campaign.

The defender certainly has the right mindset to achieve in British football and a move to Celtic Park will certainly go a long way into helping him to adapt his game.

Brendan Rodgers was desperate to bring in a new centre-back this summer, and with their success in keeping Dedryck Boyata, he will be hoping the duo form a solid partnership at the back.
