Look at him now: Charlie Mulgrew and Celtic - Celtic

Celtic struggled last time out against Livingston as they couldn’t find a way past the Lions at Parkhead, but the two dropped points don’t really mean anything in terms of the title race.

However, one thing that’s proved to be a mistake was letting Charlie Mulgrew leave for absolutely nothing back in August of 2016.

The defender progressed through Celtic’s youth system but he wasn’t able to make a single appearance for the Hoops as he was sent out on loan Dundee United before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, he enjoyed a very successful time of things during his second spell at the club as he produced an impressive 29 goals and 34 assists in 208 appearances. He helped the Hoops win eight domestic trophies in Scotland and always created plenty of excitement down the left-hand side.

Kieran Tierney has been excellent in recent years for the Hoops but fans may have loved Mulgrew just as much.

But, times have changed and one thing that’s currently worrying Celtic supporters is Dedryck Boyata’s future as he’s set to leave in the summer with his contract expiring at Parkhead.

Interestingly, Celtic fans had no idea that they had the perfect replacement for the Belgian right under their nose back in 2010, as Charlie Mulgrew operated as a left-back during his time at the club.

The Scotsman has been simply sensational since being converted into a central defender at Blackburn Rovers as he’s produced 10 goals this season, and he produced an incredible 14 goals and five assists last season.

He would be the perfect replacement for Boyata as he can provide a wealth of experience, as well as a constant goal threat and he can create plenty of opportunities. Mulgrew has also shown that he can ensure defensive solidity as he very rarely lets the opposition get past him, so Celtic really could do with having him back.
