Look at him now: Virgil Van Dijk and Celtic - Celtic

Celtic fans will always remember one ex-player’s time at the club, and that man is Virgil Van Dijk.

The Hoops signed the Dutchman from Groningen for £2.7 million (as per Transfermarkt).

He made his debut on the 17th of August in a 2–0 Scottish Premiership win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie Stadium, before making his first start for the Scottish giants against Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Supporters got to witness just how dangerous he can be in the final third against Ross County as he bagged his first two goals for the club.

Celtic fans knew they’d found a special player after witnessing his first season at the club as he produced five goals and his inclusion in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year certainly helped.

His second season was when he really made a name for himself as the stats he produced made him look like a striker, as well as a quality central defender. He bagged 10 goals and six assists on his way to helping Celtic win the league once again, as well as being included in the Team of the Season.

He featured in 115 games for Celtic, producing 15 goals and seven assists.

Sadly, the 27-year-old moved to Premier League side Southampton for £14.13 million on the 1st of September 2015, before moving on to bigger and better things at Liverpool where he’s taken the Reds to new heights.

Celtic fans will be lucky to see another player as good as Van Dijk rock up at Parkhead in the future, as the Dutchman really is a once in a lifetime player. He’s gone on to establish himself as one of the world’s best players in the current campaign, and Neil Lennon even called him the world’s best centre-half this year.
