The majority of Celtic fans will be focused on their clash with Rangers on Sunday, however, the club appear to be keeping their attention on the long-term future of some of their players.
A number of men are out of contract in the summer but Neil Lennon has confirmed that they are in talks with one of their more experienced stars to try to come to an agreement.
What’s the News?
According to a report by The Daily Record, Celtic remain in talks with Mikael Lustig about extending his stay beyond the end of the season.
“Discussions are ongoing at the minute,” he said. “Lustig and a few others are speaking as well, like Scott Sinclar and Nir Bitton. That’s ongoing at the minute”.
It may come as a surprise to hear that Celtic are in talks with Lustig about a new deal, despite the right-back having been a key figure over the years.
The Sweden international’s form and his performances have been somewhat questionable at times this season, as they have significantly dipped lower than the standards that he used to produce.
In some matches, Lustig seems to have been targeted by some of their opponents as a possible weak link in the side and worth being an area to attack as the 32-year-old’s tackling has been far from its best this season.
The arrivals of Jeremy Toljan and Manny Perez also would have made his chances slightly more concerning as his chances in the first-team have been limited following the arrival of Lennon.
However, keeping him at the club could also make perfect sense for Celtic as he knows what it takes to win silverware and with Toljan likely to return to Borussia Dortmund in the summer, he may get his place back in the first-team next season.
Celtic fans, does Lustig deserve an extension? Or would you be happy to see him leave in the summer? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
