Celtic fans know full well that one day the time will come that Kieran Tierney will leave the club for bigger and better things, and when that happens they don’t want to be stuck with Emilio Izaguirre. That’s where these rumours come in, as Football Insider claims the Hoops want to sign 25-year-old Milad Mohammadi.
Milad Mohammadi isn’t a name that the world will be familiar with but the Iranian defender is worth his salt. Currently plying his trade in the Russian Premier League with Akhmat Grozny and with his contract running out this summer, the Hoops could finally be set to sign their man after a number of years of interest in the speed-demon.
Neil Lennon will know that one day the club will need to go on without Tierney and whether he gets the job or not this summer is irrelevant to changing that fact. If he finds himself in charge this summer he will need to act to ensure that the Parkhead faithful are set for when their Scottish defender leaves, and that will mean bolstering the left-back position.
To secure the defender’s signature the Hoops will need to fight off interest from both Fulham and Bristol City, but that shouldn’t be too tough. The allure of playing European football will be too great to ignore, and Celtic will be able to offer a much more substantial contract offer than the two Championship sides given their participation in European competition.
So what are the potential consequences of Celtic making a summer move for Milad Mohammadi?
Celtic land Kieran Tierney replacement
Kieran Tierney is one of the world’s most sought after left-backs. The young Scottish sensation has won over just about everyone who has laid eyes on him and one day he will have to leave Parkhead. The 21-year-old is already one of the Bhoys’ best players and when he’s absent, Emilio Izaguirre is definitely not a player who is good enough to be stepping up and filling in.
Should the Hoops find themselves stung with the painful departure of their Parkhead born and bred defender, they will need to move in the transfer window, and that is exactly where Mohammadi would be perfect. The money that Tierney would generate wouldn’t even need to go back into a transfer fee for the Iranian as he’s available for free at the end of his contract, and he looks a perfect fit.
Long-term target finally arrives
Neil Lennon has only been in charge for a matter of months so he won’t have been eyeing up Milad Mohammadi for very long if at all. However, the Football Insider report clearly states that the Hoops have been interested in Mohammadi for a number of years. If they are to secure his signature it will mark the capture of a long-term target and will see them pip a few English sides to him too.
As far as the Bhoys are concerned, that’s a big win in their books. The money and influence in the English game is often incredibly tough to compete with, so being able to allure a player who seems destined to his ply his trade south of the border can be very difficult. With Mohammadi, though, it looks doable and the Parkhead higher-ups have to act fast.
