Former Rangers man Alan Hutton has lavished Allan McGregor with praise for his displays upon his return to Ibrox.
McGregor made the journey back to Scotland following spells with Besiktas, Hull City and Cardiff City after he left the Glasgow outfit back in 2012. He returned to the club on a free transfer in 2018 after his contract expired at the KCOM Stadium.
The ex-Gers defender said he has been left shocked by the level of performances from the 38-year-old, claiming there were some doubts as to whether he could reach the heights of his first spell. He told Football Insider: “The one who probably stands out first and foremost is McGregor.
“I think obviously coming back, people looked at his age and things like that and maybe thought he wouldn’t maybe be as good as he was on the first occasion but I think coming back he’s proved what a top-class goalkeeper he is.
“I think he’s actually better now than what he was back then. To have someone like that come into your squad and not only put in performances but be a leader on the pitch – you can see how much it means to him.”
The ex-Scotland international has been in quite stunning form this season, keeping a staggering 24 clean sheets in 48 games across all competitions (via Transfermarkt). It’s a figure that highlights how well he has performed, backing up Hutton’s statement.
He showed his quality in the recent Europa League tie against Bayer Leverkusen, where the £675k-rated, as per Transfermarkt, shot-stopper made four vital saves to stop the Germans from embarrassing Steven Gerrard’s men, as per WhoScored.
Without McGregor in goal, Gers could have had more losses than they’ve accumulated this season. He’s been an influential figure and with his contract having been in extended in December 2019, he could still have a lot more to offer the Ibrox giants.
