The birth of Manolo Gabbiadini’s Southampton career has cheered up many Saints fans here in the Transfer Tavern.

Losing three consecutive games was a rare and disappointing sight to Southampton fans recently as it was the worst run the Saints had been on all season. What made it worse, too, was that two of the three losses came against sides which the Saints were above in the league at the time.

However, a staggering 4-0 away win over Sunderland last week definitely helped them forget their previous losses. Two goals from new boy Gabbiadini made it that ever bit sweeter too.

It’s important that Southampton don’t get carried away with themselves. There is undoubtedly room for improvement in Claude Puel’s starting eleven, with some players just not living up to their full capabilities.

Taking this into consideration, let’s look at two Saints players who need to prove their worth to the manager Puel, in order to stay at St Mary’s Stadium – according to our landlord…

Shane Long

There are advantages and disadvantages to every situation. As the Italian Gabbiadini has been in firing form in his first few games, it means that Shane Long will now fall further down the pecking order St Mary’s.

Although having only played two games, Gabbiadini has already equalled Long’s total goals in the league this season, at three.

The Irishman has to show Puel that he has what it takes to get his place back in Southampton’s starting eleven, whether it means playing in place of Gabbiadini, or alongside him.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg

The promising Danish midfielder has looked average at best for Southampton since his move from German giants Bayern Munich last summer.

Not even getting a goal, or an assist, for Southampton in the league this season, Højbjerg is certainly not living up to his £12.8 million price tag.

Something has to change for the Dane. Whether it’s a different position, or a spark of motivation, Puel will by no means even consider to play him if he continues to play this way for Southampton’s next few games.
