Sheffield United: Blades doing exactly the right thing by getting rid of Evans

Sheffield United striker Ched Evans has reportedly attracted interested from five different clubs as he seeks a move away from Bramall Lane, according to a report by The Daily Mirror.

The forward has been told by the Blades that they are prepared to grant him a free transfer as they look to offload the former Manchester City man.

Manager Chris Wilder made his intentions very clear by transfer listing Evans immediately after they were guaranteed their return to the top flight.

He has spent two of the last three season’s away from Sheffield United since returning to football after a four-year absence from the game due to a rape conviction, which has subsequently been quashed.

In his 2016/17 campaign at Chesterfield, he bagged seven goals in 29 games for the League one side.

And then in 2018/19, he found himself at Fleetwood Town in a season that resurrected his career somewhat, bagging 17 goals in 39 league games.

However, Wilder’s men already boast David McGoldrick and Billy Sharp on their books – who netted a combined 38 goals during their promotion challenge.

And they are also looking to complete the signings of both Lys Mousset and Oli McBurnie from Bournemouth and Swansea City.

Evans has never scored more than ten goals in a season where he has been playing in one of England’s top two divisions – and that campaign where he did manage double figures with Norwich was 11 years ago.

In addition, in his one season back in Yorkshire, he failed to net a single league goal and made very little impact on the team.

Ultimately, everyone at Bramall Lane needs to be pulling in the same direction in order for the team to give themselves the best chance of avoiding relegation straight back down to the second tier.

Evans, who is already 30 years old and therefore unlikely to improve, is an unwanted distraction who has barely kicked a ball for the club in seven years.

His presence at the club will not help on or off the pitch and if a free transfer is the way to get him off the books then that’s what Wilder’s side should do.

Sheffield United fans, do you think the club are right to let Evans go for free this summer? Let us know your thoughts by sharing them in the comments section below!
