Sheffield United: John Lundstram could leave in the summer as contract talks stall

With the transfer window rapidly approaching, Sheffield United are trying to tie down some of the players who have performed well this this season. But this is seemingly proving more difficult than expected and reports suggest one key man could be on his way out this summer.

According to Yorkshire Live, John Lundstram, who is contracted at the club until June 2021, is struggling to agree a new contract. The talks have been going on for eight months now, with no agreement being reached, and United were lucky they could activate a clause to extend his contract until 2021 as his original deal was due to expire this summer.

question mark

What is Chris Wilder's win percentage as Sheffield United manager?

This has not gone down well with Wilder, who could look to sell the midfielder if he does not commit his long-term future to the club in order to ensure they get a fee for him rather than losing him for free next summer.

Lundstram has had a very impressive season for the Blades as he has scored four goals and picked up three assists, as well as managing on average 1.4 shots per game, via WhoScored.

This puts him as the fourth highest goalscorer and also the player with the joint-second most assists at the Blades and if he were to leave it would be a big loss.

His performances have impressed many, with former Everton man Kevin Sheedy saying that he is ‘An inspiration for all you young players.’

However Wilder understandably will not want to bow down to his demands and wants to keep his authority, so if the player does not want to commit it would be best to sell him.

Heavily linked John Swift, who the Blades are trying to sign for £3.5 million could be the ideal replacement. He has averaged 1.1 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game, whilst at the other end of the pitch he averages 1.4 shots and 2.3 key passes per game. This shows that the Englishman can support the team in both attack and defence and has proven to be a well-rounded midfielder for the Royals, per WhoScored.

It will be a hard decision to allow Lundstram to depart but it looks like the club are preparing for the scenario and they can’t have a player in control because it will set a bad precedent.
