Sheffield United: Blades tie down four players to new contracts

Sheffield United haven’t had the best of form lately but they have provided some positive news as four players have signed new deals following the recent return of the Premier League.

The Premier League published retained list of players for each club and the Blades’ list included Phil Jagielka, Kieron Freeman, Jack Rodwell and Leon Clarke. Their contracts were due to expire next Tuesday but they have agreed deals until the end of this season.

Sheffield United’s squad depth has had to be utilised more since the return as they have had injuries to Jack O’Connell and John Fleck to name a few, as well as having to navigate John Egan’s suspension. This has seen players like Jack Robinson finally make his Premier League debut after signing in January as well as Simon Moore filling in between the sticks for his second appearance of the season as Dean Henderson was unavailable against Manchester United.

Even though the return has highlighted that they definitely need some more quality and depth in the squad, it has definitely emphasised that players who are on the fringes of the squad like Freeman, Rodwell, Clarke and Jagielka are needed for the remainder of the season. The fixture list is packed, highlighted by the fact that the Blades played three games in eight days, and Wilder will need to rotate on occasions, so signing those four players on short-term deals was a smart move.

Blades fans, are you glad that those four players have signed short-term deals? Comment below with your views!
