It seems that Sheffield United are looking to strengthen their attacking options and the result in the Championship play-off final bodes well for them, as it may give them more of a chance to sign reported transfer target Ollie Watkins from Brentford.
According to The Telegraph, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Sheffield United are in pursuit of the striker, whose Brentford side lost 2-1 against Fulham at Wembley on Tuesday night and missed out on the chance of getting promoted to the Premier League.
The 24-year-old reportedly has an £18m release clause which all three clubs are ready to trigger to bolster their squads for next season.
This looks like it would be a really good signing for the Blades. Watkins played 49 times in the Championship last season, including the play-offs, and scored 26 goals whilst also picking up three assists, per WhoScored. His confidence in front of goal is further highlighted by the fact that he averaged 2.7 shots and 1.5 key passes per game.
Last season, the top league scorers at Bramall Lane (Lys Mousset and Oli McBurnie) only managed six goals each and, even though Watkins is playing in the division below, there is no doubt that he has an eye for the net and his potential as a Premier League striker is there for all to see.
It is important that Chris Wilder improves his options up front, as Billy Sharp is 34 and David McGoldrick is 32 and they will not be around for much longer, so to bring in a young, in-form striker like Watkins seems like a great transfer.
The Blades proved that successful Championship players can perform in England’s top flight with good structure and tactics, as most of their current squad were involved in their promotion to the Premier League last year, so supporters should not be fearful of the club potentially signing someone who has thrived in the second tier.
