Sir Alex Ferguson has labelled Ashley Cole’s tackle on Javier Hernandez as ‘absolutely shocking’, and called the England defender reckless after Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday.
Goals from Chris Smalling, Nani and Wayne Rooney gave the Premier League champions three points in a 3-1 win, but an injury to Mexican forward Hernandez will have dampened the Old Traffordoutfit’s celebrations.
Cole caught Hernandez on the shin as the home team’s striker looked to score, and the Scottish coach felt the challenge was out of order.
“I don’t know what we’re going to do. To me it was a shocking tackle, an absolutely shocking tackle he’s very reckless at times, Ashley Cole. He is committed of course, but he sometimes can go over the edge a bit and that was an example of that.”
Wayne Rooney’s effort had struck the post, and Hernandez was brought down whilst trying to convert the rebound; Ferguson has queried why his team were not awarded a penalty.
“The referee has booked him, but if he’s booked him, I don’t know why it wasn’t a penalty. I must ask him.”
The extent of the injury is yet to be determined, but Fergie feels his forward may be sidelined for a number of weeks.
“We’re going to have to wait. At the moment his leg is very numb and he doesn’t have any feeling, so he could be out for a couple of weeks maybe,” he concluded.
