It’s safe to say that Saints fans in the Transfer Tavern are frustrated by the recent results produced by the south coast club in recent weeks.

Claude Puel has been rather quiet in the transfer window thus far but Saints fans may not mind that as long as they keep on to a few certain players, though many of them believe the Frenchman really should be signing a striker in the New Year sales.

Still, if the Frenchman manages to keep hold of key players, an addition of some quality among the ranks may well propel the Saints into the top half of the table, while also building for next season.

Our Landlord fully expects Saints to stick to their transfer policy of developing the young and unknown talent that they find but the wrong signing could have big consequences for Southampton.

Keeping all this in mind, here are TWO things they could do with avoiding this January…

Selling van Dijk

Our Landlord believes van Dijk is crucial to the Saints for the second part of the season and any progression up the league will be down to if Puel can keep hold of the Dutchman.

With a £50m price tag slapped on his forehead, Southampton insist he is not for sale, though with clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City lurking, how long can the Saints keep hold of the Dutchman?

Maybe he will he go in the summer, though it’s vital Saints reject any desperate offer from potential suitors as the window winds down.

Not signing another striker

With Charlie Austin still sidelined, the Saints find themselves ranked the second lowest goalscorers in the league. While Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez are currently carrying the goal scoring mantle for the Saints, our Landlord believes it is vital for Puel to invest in a striker with Manolo Gabbadiani being the latest front man linked with the club.

Whether or not the Italian international is the right man to lead the line remains to be seen, though Saints need to find exactly that man very quickly.
