According to The Sun, Southampton are readying themselves for bids for their defensive partnership of Virgil Van Dijk and Jose Fonte in the near future.
It’s come as annoyingly familiar news to our Saints fans here in the Transfer Tavern who have had to get used to seeing their star players getting poached, particularly by the two linked clubs in this story – Liverpool and Manchester United.
The Reds have taken the likes of Dejan Lovren, Sadio Mane and Nathaniel Clyne from the south coast club in recent years with them becoming key members of the first team.
United, meanwhile, have signed Morgan Schneiderlin and Luke Shaw from the Saints with them enjoying slightly less successful moves up until now.
It’s believed that Liverpool will go for Van Dijk after the Dutchman has seen many praise him for his performances at the back this year.
The former Celtic man has seen his stock rise considerably whilst his partner Fonte, linked with United, has gone quietly about his business alongside.
Should the two move Claude Puel will have to rebuild the heart of his defence as the Saints continue to push for European football once again this season.
Our landlord reckons it could be a step too far for the club if these two go and thinks Claude Puel needs to think of a plan as soon as.
