Southampton are already preparing for January’s transfer window as they look to compete with a rival club for a former Premier League winner.
It is understood that his former side, Leicester City, are also interested in the 28-year-old after he has failed to hold down a regular spot at Stamford Bridge since joining 12 months ago.
Drinkwater could look to leave west London this winter, should first-team football still not be an option for him and Mark Hughes could look to make a move once again.
The Saints are thought to have held an interest in the England international this summer, however, they added Stuart Armstrong to their midfield instead.
The Verdict:

Drinkwater could look to end his nightmare at Chelsea at the next possible chance he has and a switch to Southampton could help him get back to playing regular football.
The Saints took Danny Ings from Liverpool after a torrid time and the striker has already started life at St. Mary’s Stadium in a positive fashion.
However, the £18m-rated midfielder, as per Transfermarkt, could find it difficult to break into the first-team on the south coast, with the likes of Mario Lemina and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg already performing solidly as a central duo.
