Loads of Southampton fans were fearing the worst after Jannik Vestergaard was named in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s starting XI for the recent win against Crystal Palace.
And their worries were quickly vindicated when the defender’s clumsy bit of play around the 20-minute mark presented Cenk Tosun with a glorious opportunity to open the scoring. However, both Vestergaard and Southampton managed to recover as they went on to secure a 2-0 victory and keep a clean sheet.
In fact, overall, it was a fairly solid display from Vestergaard. He won six aerial duels on the night, the most in his side and three behind Crystal Palace’s James Tomkins, who registered more than any other player during the encounter with nine (via WhoScored).
The Denmark international finished the game with a 7.1 match rating and it is now up to him to maintain that standard of performance. However, looking at the pre-match thoughts of some Southampton supporters, it does not seem like they have much confidence in him.
You can have a look at what they had to say below…

Vestergaard starting and no Ings is a risk but hopefully Obafemi and long with their pace will be interesting #SaintsFc

Vestergaard AND Stephens at the back, this is going to be a long night, lol
On the positive side, with both Obafemi AND Long upfront we’ll officially have the fastest running attack in any team this evening @theuglyinside
