As per reliable Chelsea journalist Nizaar Kinsella of Goal, there has been a Southampton transfer update as the south coast club now eye yet another player from the Champions League holders in Xavier Simons.
The Lowdown: Saints chasing west London talent…
It is no secret that the Saints wish to make Blues striker Armando Broja’s loan deal at St Mary’s a permanent one following his impressive temporary spell.
The Albania striker has impressed under Ralph Hasenhuttl and reports even suggested that Southampton were willing to table a substantial bid for him in January.
Tino Anjorin is another Chelsea ace remaining on Southampton’s radar, with the club’s scouts set to keep tabs on his loan spell at Huddersfield Town.
The Latest: Saints ‘trying to poach’ Simons…
It is believed that Southampton are now ‘trying to poach‘ the 19-year-old, who has just months remaining on his Chelsea contract, but the in-demand teenager has several other suitors.
Along with Premier League trio Brighton, Norwich and Watford, Hasenhuttl’s side will also have to battle ‘several Championship sides’ for Simons’ signature.
The Verdict: Low-risk move
Lauded as yet another promising Chelsea talent, the former England under-17 international can play as an anchor in front of the back four, and also at central midfield, right-wing, right-back and as a central defender (Transfermarkt).
On a free transfer, this move could be very low-risk for a big potential Southampton payoff, but judging by the amount of interested suitors, it will be no easy to feat to win the race for Simons’ signature.
