Spaniard All Set To Spark At Spurs

Barcelona’s Txiki Begiristain is being increasingly tipped to join the Tottenham executive ranks as Sporting Director.

The ex-Spain international has successfully overseen a trophy-laden era at Barcelona in the role of ‘Technical Secretary’, but the instalment of incoming president Sandro Rosell – replacing old ally Joan Laporta – means Begiristain is set for a Nou Camp departure.

Handed a rebuilding task in 2003, his role involved creating and administrating a recruitment policy and conveyer belt of talent, after four years of underachievement at Barca. The policy was an effective amalgamation of attracting potential world-class superstars, headline grabbing names, and encouraging progression through the youth academy.

Thus, following a period of immense success, the 45-year-old boasts quite a CV and is reportedly sought after by Tottenham, Chelsea and Rangers. However, it is appears Begiristain favours a Premier League venture and Tottenham are currently thought to be the most likely destination; though Begiristain is in no rush to accept offers.

The lure of the Champions League, and a new dawn at Tottenham, means it could be a productive match. As Spurs push onto the next level, his expertise could prove beneficial and White Hart Lane could offer Begiristain fruitful ground. However, having dabbled with the ‘Sporting Director’ position in the past – with the largely fractious and ineffectual Damien Comolli – Tottenham will be aware of the latent problems. Moreover, it remains to be seen whether manager Harry Redknapp would really be comfortable working with Begiristain.
