Steven Gerrard needs just a couple of players to finish his Rangers rebuild

It’s been a busy summer at Ibrox as Steven Gerrard looks to spark a major revamp in order to catch Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership. The former Liverpool legend has overseen a successful Europa League campaign thus far, though returning the Light Blues to the title equation will be a much harder task.

As well as early success on the continental front, Gerrard has already been busy in the transfer market. 10 new players have walked through the doors in Glasgow as the club look to put two largely miserable years of recruitment behind them, though it doesn’t seem like they are done yet.

The Gers chief recently revealed that he was hoping to sign a couple more players before the start of their SPFL campaign, with a striker and a central defender seemingly top of the wish list. So, with that in mind, here’s a look at the players we think Rangers should target to ensure they’re ready for the new season.

With Rangers clearly in need of a new central defender after a deal for Manchester City’s Kean Byran fell flat on its face, the Light Blues could do a lot worse than looking to Chelsea. Indeed, the Blues still have Matt Miazga in their squad and the American impressed out on loan with Vitesse last season, so could be a good option to come into Ibrox.

A pure athlete and a palpable goal threat, he’d be a handful in both boxes for the opposition and would surely relish a chance to work under a legend such as Gerrard at a big club like Rangers.

Kyle Lafferty has been linked with a return to Ibrox of late and, while he certainly knows how to score goals in the Scottish Premiership, would be a fairly underwhelming addition. With that in mind, Gerrard should look to the future and try to lure a young talent to Scotland, as Celtic did with Moussa Dembele a few years ago.

Having said that, Southampton’s Michael Obafemi would be a good addition in that mould. The Irishman has developed in one of the world’s best academies, even making his Premier League debut last season, so would certainly come with a decent pedigree.
