Sky Sports News columnist Richard Bailey has confirmed that struggling Portsmouth have asked FIFA to investigate the circumstances surrounding their proposed transfer of Kaiser Chiefs defender Onismor Bhasera.
Pompey claim that they have signed the young defender on a free transfer after a work permit for the player was granted after an appeal and after his contract with Kaiser Chiefs ran out. Shortly after Portsmouth had announced the signing of the player, the Chiefs declared that Bhasera actually had another year remaining on his contract with them and demanded a fee for the player to conclude the transfer. A fee that Portsmouth are unwilling to pay for a player they believe should join them for nothing.
The confusion has left the young left backs career stalled and with no immediate resolution in sight, Portsmouth have called upon the governing body to arbitrate in the matter and to hopefully come to a mutually agreeable solution for all parties. A spokesman for the club stated;
“The situation is that Onismor believes he is a free agent and Kaiser Chiefs say he isn’t, so we have asked Fifa to look into it to enable us to progress with the move,
“We have successfully appealed a work permit and want the player to sign for Pompey but he can only do so once we know the true nature of his registration.”
Kaiser Chiefs manager, Bobby Motaung however believes the deal has not been concluded because the Premier League side are in dire straits financially, a claim that has subsequently been vehemently refuted by the club who insist that they do not owe the South African side any fee for the player.
Given their perilous financial position it seems that FIFA’s ruling on the transfer will be critical as to whether Portsmouth opt to sign the player or not and perhaps the saddest aspect of this episode is that while all parties involved await FIFA’s decision, a promising 22 year old footballer is left in limbo with no idea where his future will eventually lie.
