‘Are they plotting for life in the Championship?’ quipped one Newcastle fan at the bar in the Tavern after reading that Sunderland manager David Moyes made a personal trip to Scotland last Friday night to watch Efe Ambrose in action for Hibernian.
The 51-cap Nigeria international left Celtic over the winter to switch to the Edinburgh side on an emergency loan after falling out of favour under Bhoys boss Brendan Rodgers and has since made two appearances in the second tier of Scottish football.
However, despite his woes this season, the Chronicle have reported that Moyes made the trip north to Tannadice Park to watch the Hibs man in action vs. Dundee United as he seemingly gets plans in place for the summer transfer window.
Ambrose is seen as one of the Hibees’ star men and is known to be a ball-playing centre-back, which may appeal to the Black Cats boss, especially if his side drop into the Championship for 2017/18 – a scenario that is not beyond possibility given they are six points from safety with eleven games to play.
The 28-year-old has not played for Celtic since the summer Champions League qualifiers and is likely to be allowed to move on a free transfer when his contract expires in a few months’ time.
