Sunderland youngster Niall Huggins is now back in training for the Black Cats after his injury absence, reliable journalist James Hunter has confirmed.

The Lowdown: Huggins out injured

The 22-year-old moved to the Stadium of Light from Leeds United back in 2021 but he has been a fringe player, only making six appearances to date.

Injuries haven’t helped in that respect, however, and Huggins’ last outing for Sunderland came last month against Fulham in the FA Cup, with continuous issues holding him back.

It looks as though his latest return is now on the cards, though, following a fresh update.

The Latest: Journalist confirms return

Taking to Twitter, The Chronicle‘s Hunter said that Huggins is training alongside his teammates again after his recent absence:

“Huggins back in training.”

The Verdict: Boost for Sunderland

Granted, Huggins hasn’t been able to make himself a key man at Sunderland yet, but this is still unquestionably good news for them, in terms of squad depth.

Mowbray clearly feels the young defender has a lot to offer, having hailed him as ‘amazing’ recently, and he is still a maturing player who is learning his game, with his current deal not expiring until 2025.

Injuries are cruel for any footballer, stunting their growth, and if Huggins can rid himself of the ongoing fitness issues, there is no reason why he can’t be a key man for Sunderland eventually.

This is now a big period in the Black Cats’ season, as they look to secure a place in the playoffs, and the relentless nature of the fixtures means the £3,900-a-week Huggins will surely have a part to play.
