Ewood Park, Blackburn, Britain - October 18, 2022. Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray applauds fans after the match.

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray has promised that there ‘will be a benefit’ to the Championship side’s training camp during the World Cup break.

The Lowdown: Flying out to Dubai

The Black Cats secured a 2-1 victory over Birmingham City almost two weeks ago, so are heading into the international hiatus 15th in the table, just four points outside the playoffs.

The Wearside outfit have now flown out to Dubai for a week-long camp, which will include a friendly match against Al-Shabab before returning home this Sunday.

The Latest: Mowbray’s comments

Speaking to Sunderland’s official website, Mowbray outlined his ambitions for the break and revealed what he hopes the squad will be able to get out of the trip. He said:

“For me, it’s about the bonding and the ability to be together. To have breakfast, lunch, training and on an evening watch the World Cup matches together. There will be a benefit.

“Ally that to some pretty key footballers coming back to fitness, I would hope on the back of that we can reboot our season and win football matches on a regular basis.”

The Verdict: Much-needed break

Sunderland are in a great position at this moment in time, but there’s no doubt that this break will do them the world of good after a jam-packed first half of the season.

The players will be given the perfect opportunity to reset mentally, not to mention that the injured members of the squad can use this break in fixtures to take a step closer to a return to action.

The Black Cats’ first game back will be at home against Millwall, and Mowbray will be hoping that his boys can secure three points to reduce the deficit in the race for the top six.
