It’s a busy time of the year for all football supporters and for the Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern, it’s been a decent if not slightly underwhelming first half to the campaign!
The Gunners have lost ground over the last few weeks to Chelsea at the top of the league but with plenty of games left, you cannot rule them out yet.
But, whilst it’s not an impossible task, Arsene Wenger’s team are going to have to be in good form into 2017 and thereafter if they are to catch the Blues.
One thing that has dominated the chat in the Transfer Tavern over the festive period has been transfers, namely defenders that would really suit the Gunners, who will be hoping for the title come May.
So after a lengthy chat with some of our locals, our landlord has compiled a list of four defenders Arsene Wenger really should look to sign in January…
Raphael Varane

This is an ambitious shout and a transfer that very much depends on whether Arsenal want to pay mega money, but there is little doubting that Raphael Varane is one of the best young defenders in the world right now.
The French international spent a lot of last season sidelined with a thigh injury and now he’s back to full fitness, he’s looking strong once again.
Arsenal have a real pedigree for developing some of the world’s best young defenders and there’s thoughts Varane could go onto be the best.
Kourtney Hause

Wolves youngster Kourtney Hause has broken into the first-team fully this season and when he’s been on his game, he’s looked very good alongside veteran captain Danny Batth.
He’s quick, can fill in at full-back and is already on the circuit at U21 level.
There are things to tweak in his game but as Wolves continue to scrap at the bottom of the Championship, some of their supporters feel this young man can definitely go onto bigger and better things.
Layvin Kurzawa

Despite veteran Brazilian defender Maxwell dominating proceedings at PSG for some years, young French defender Layvin Kurzawa is now the number one man on the left-hand side at Parc Des Princes.
He’s a rapid customer who has been tipped to become one of the best French full-backs in years which makes for excellent news for Gunners supporters, if Wenger ever makes a move.
Competition is tight at the Emirates already but a player of Kurzawa’s quality would really add another dimension to their side.
Kurt Zouma

Despite being back from injury, Kurt Zouma is struggling to get into Antonio Conte’s side at Chelsea and if things continue, he could seek first-team football elsewhere.
A move to Premier League rivals Arsenal would mean he wouldn’t need to leave the London area and he’d be guaranteed more game-time in a defensive-line that could do with a boost if they are to challenge for the title.
He’s a colossal man who packs a real punch and say what you like about affinities, he’d be excellent for the Gunners – if he made the move across London.
