Sunderland have been one of the Premier League’s biggest strugglers so far this season and it’s safe to say their fans here in the Tavern have been a little concerned with results over the past few weeks!
The Black Cats have failed to find consistency for the majority of the campaign but their results have been steadily picking up in recent weeks.
But picking up on the chit-chat between Sunderland fans here in the pub, it’s clear that defensive downfalls are seriously costing the side dearest right now, despite the improved form of Kone and Djilibodji at the back.
So with that in mind, we’ve been given some suggestions by supporters for some defenders that they think will seriously improve the side going forward.
So in order to stay up, here’s 4 defenders Moyes should try and sign in January if the Black Cats are to remain in the Premier League…
Ben Davies

Whilst Patrick van Aanholt has shown some signs of improvement in recent weeks, his performances just haven’t been consistent enough for the entirety of the season to ensure Sunderland’s safety.
A man we’d like to slot into this Sunderland side is Ben Davies, who has struggled for game time at Tottenham Hotspur this season. He was fantastic for Swansea during his time there and he showed during his stint in the Spurs first-team that he’s ready to be given plenty of first-team minutes this campaign.
He could be a season-saver for the Black Cats.
Timothy Fosu-Mensah

He’s the Manchester United youngster that really wrote the headlines last season but this campaign has been far quieter for Timothy Fosu Mensah.
He was well used by former manager Louis Van Gaal but under Jose Mourinho, he’s struggled for game time. With his first-team action limited, a loan move might be best for his development and Sunderland would be a great destination.
Despite being young, he’s a powerful unit who could fill in at either centre-half or full-back if needed.
Branislav Ivanovic

This would be a real coup indeed but with Branislav Ivanovic’s Chelsea career really winding down under Antonio Conte, an ambitious move for the Serbian international wouldn’t be a bad shout in the slightest.
He’s a burly, experienced option who knows the division well and would no doubt be able to fill some sort of void in the leaky Sunderland back-four at some point along the line.
Pontus Jansson

Leeds United have been flying in the Championship this season and a lot of their good defensive work can come down to the form of Pontus Jansson, who has been absolutely superb.
The Swedish international has been a revelation since moving to Yorkshire from Torino and he’ll be a man in hot demand after some fantastic showings for Garry Monk’s side this season.
He’d be a real coup to this Sunderland side, if they could bring him in.
