Here at the Transfer Tavern we expected a lot from Southampton this season, with the arrival of a successful French manager in Claude Puel and then with Europa League football also on the menu.
However, it hasn’t quite clicked this season for the Saints but perhaps a successful January window could be just what’s needed at St Mary’s.
The team has been playing well enough but it just hasn’t worked out at crucial moments in the league for the former Nice boss Puel and so this window could really make or break their season.
With that in mind, then, it’s important that they recruit well this January and in particular they could try and improve their midfield options. They really need to improve in order to break through the barrier and into the Europa League spots again.
With that in mind, then, surely one of these four midfielders should join Southampton in January according to our landlord…
Wylan Cyprien
The 21-year-old has been superb for OGC Nice as they sit top of the French Ligue 1 this season – so it’ll be hard to tempt him away!
But the former Lens midfielder was brought to Nice only in the summer so if he’s still got that urge to keep moving forward he could be up for it. He’s got plenty of time to improve, too, so he could be quite the one to watch.
Mogan Sanson
The Montpellier midfielder has impressed this season so why not have the chance to play in a strong Southampton side? At just 22-years-old he’d be a risk to bring in with no experience of the Premier League but like many have before him, he could make the transition from France to England! It’s certainly a risk worth taking, then, as he looks a great prospect.
Remo Freuler
The Swiss midfielder currently with Atalanta in Italy has been superb along side the highly regarded Fracnk Kessie.
He’s a superb central midfielder who can play anywhere in the middle of the park and at 24-years-old, it could be a great time for him to really catch his big break.
Tom Rogic

The Celtic midfielder has been superb this season and it could be his time to make that step up to the Premier League.
It wouldn’t be the first time a player has made the switch from Celtic to Southampton to go on to be a success! Just look at Virgil Van Dijk and Fraser Forster who have both been brilliant since they arrived and maybe that could help convince Rogic to join them in becoming a Saints player.
