Tottenham currently sit seventh in the league and are just 5 points off fourth-placed Chelsea. With key players such as Harry Kane and Heung-min Son currently sidelined and Spurs struggling for positive results as of late, here are the two main players that Mourinho should get rid of in the summer…
Eric Dier
The Englishman has spent six seasons with Spurs since moving to North London from Sporting Lisbon for £4 million in the summer of 2014. Dier’s first season saw him record an 80% tackle success rate in 28 appearances – but this campaign also included 3 errors leading to goals [Premier League], and his years at the club have often mirrored this juxtaposition.
Over recent seasons, however, Dier’s form has gradually dropped year by year, with the defender only recording a 65% tackle success rate in 13 games this season in the league [via Premier League].
Ultimately, since Jose Mourinho was appointed manager, the player has not done anything as of yet to prove to the Portuguese manager why he should be kept on the books at Tottenham.
Juan Foyth
Originally a signing from the Mauricio Pochettino era, the young Argentinian centre-back has failed to make an impression for Tottenham and has seen a lack of game time during his three years at the club.
Foyth made his league debut for Spurs in a 3-2 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers in November 2018 – conceding two penalties which were both converted. As well as this, the young defender has failed to play a game since the start of 2020 and has only registered four appearances in the league this season – three of which came as a substitute. Presently, he is averaging just 0.3 interceptions per match in the Premier League, according to WhoScored – one of the lowest averages in Spurs’ squad. From all 16 of Foyth’s appearances in the league, he has only managed a 53% tackle success rate [Premier League].
Given his lack of game time, the player should look for a move elsewhere for his own benefit if he wishes to continue to develop. He is clearly not in Mourinho’s plans, so a transfer looks to be in the best interests of all parties.
Final Verdict
Both players have underwhelmed, not really making much of a difference on the pitch. Jose Mourinho will be wanting to turn Spurs into the title-challenging side they almost were under Pochettino, so a rebuild may be on the cards. Furthermore, the likes of Dier and Foyth should make way.
