The Southampton fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are getting very excited about these two hidden gems in they’re youth academy.

Ever since the days of Matt Le Tissier, the Saints have had major success promoting from their youth academy.

The landlord was reminiscing about Alan Shearer in the early 90’s and even up to the current crop of James Ward-Prowse telling us how Southampton have produced, promoted and made more money from their youth academy than Real Madrid.

Through every manager cycle, the youth academy has stayed the same, strong and very well run.

The Saints have developed a reputation for bring quality British players up through the ranks with the likes of Gareth Bale, Calum Chambers, Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all coming from the south coast.

And the fans from St. Mary’s here in the bar reckon next season will be no different, here are two gems hidden within the Saints’ academy walls…

Jake Vokins

Jake Vokins is causing quite a stir in the under 23’s.

The 17-year-old left back has been with the Saints since the age of eight, however, over the last couple of years things have really shifted for Vokins, who has made many a fan take note.

His run in the England u17 European Championship’s will have gained him great experience with a loss to Spain in the final.

He recently signed his first professional contract for two-and-a-half years on his 17th birthday this year.

Many have likened him to Luke Shaw and Gareth Bale with his pacey full back runs and great crossing ability, his set pieces aren’t to bad either.

With growing rumours around Ryan Bertrand’s departure this summer, next season we could be seeing this talented left back flying down the Southampton flank.

Callum Slattery

Southampton’s young 18-year-old Callum Slattery is your typical box-to-box midfielder, with a hint of Jack Wilshere thrown in.

The former England U16 captain made his Southampton U21 debut aged just 15.

Since moving from Chelsea ten years ago, Slattery has gone from strength to strength.

Fifteen appearances in the U23’s last year contributing three assists showed Slattery’s adaptability playing both centre and attacking midfielder roles throughout the campaign.

He recently won the U20 Toulon Tornament with England which will give him a huge confidence boost.

With centre midfield places limited in the first team Callum will be looking towards cup runs to stamp his future authority.
