We here at the Transfer Tavern are eager to keep our Scottish punters happy by giving them as much information on what is happening in the SPFL, and in particular down at Celtic.

There has been a lot of events happening down at Celtic Park in recent years, some of which have vastly improved their circumstances such as bringing in Brendan Rodgers; being the best in recent times.

However, despite winning the SPFL league title year in year out, it has not been as successful as the fans would have perhaps liked, with heartache losing out to Rangers in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup among other heartache for the faithful punters.

With that, lets take a look at the THREE key mistakes Celtic have made in the past five years….

Allowing so much talent to head to England

The Bhoys have a habit of bringing in relatively unknown talents and making them good, and then selling them to clubs south of the border in England.

It’s damaging not just for Celtic but the Scottish game itself with players seeking moves to England; even if it means playing in League One or Two.

In particular this affected Celtic with them allowing Virgil Van Dijk to move on to Premier League outfit Southampton, where he has gone on to be one of the best defenders in the league.

This is damaging the sustainability of the club due to the fact they are struggling to maintain their best assets, unlike years previous when they were a club many players wanted to play for.

Hiring Ronny Deila

The Norwegian was experienced in the Tippeligaen, so when it came to the SPFL he was alright but when it came to the European competitions Deila failed to perform to the standard his predecessor Neil Lennon; who managed to qualify for European football.

A team of Celtic’s stature should be aiming to play Champions League football year in year out and not miss out in qualifying.

The young manager who took over in 2014 didn’t quite live up to the fans’ expectations.

He was later replaced by Rodgers in 2016.

Signing Scott Allan

In 2015, Celtic pushed through the transfer of Scott Allan from fellow Scottish side Hibernian.

At the time it was very apparent that he was very much on Rangers’ radar, it looked likely that his destination was going to be Ibrox.

Only for Celtic to then trump the Rangers bid and secure his signature and get one over on their rivals who at the time were in the division below.

Many of Celtic’s faithful punters were delighted that they had beaten Rangers to this brilliant talent!

However it didn’t turn out like that, after a handful of appearances he struggled to make the cut at Celtic Park.

Many feel that Celtic wasted the money on the player just to screw over their rivals.

This was made even more apparent when Allan joined Rotherham on-loan for the season this window.
