However, the past 5 years haven’t been plain sailing for Spurs.
A number of important and frustrating decisions have left the Lilywhites short on a number of occasions, and if not for Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival – we could be looking at a very different Tottenham in 2016.
Between a couple of poor managerial decisions and a few transfer mishaps – Spurs have been close to disaster on a number of occasions in recent years.
So with that lets us take you on a journey back over the past 5 years as we look back at the THREE key mistakes made by Tottenham in the last FIVE years…
The Sales of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric
There are definitely a few sides to this coin, but in the grand scheme of things: the sale of both Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, particularly so close to each other, was a poor piece of business for Tottenham.
Both players have now gone on to become top-tier players, arguably the best in their position in Europe – and Tottenham have been left to pick up the pieces.
Granted, the club did receive a big chunk of change for the pair; but to what end? Very average players like Capoue and Soldado came in with the funds made available by Bale and Modric’s sale – and we all know how that turned out.
Not just one mistake – TWO huge mistakes.
Andre Villas-Boas
After a disappointing spell in charge of Chelsea, Andre Villas-Boas was soon hired by Daniel Levy at Tottenham – and his spell proved to be as big of a disaster as expected.
The former Chelsea and Porto boss did seem to improve on his disappointment at Chelsea with a decent first season, but his second season was nothing short of a disaster.
A 6-0 drubbing against Manchester City and a 5-0 defeat to Liverpool sealed the fate of the Portugease manager, and closed the book on a very disappointing tenure in the English capital.
Replacing the Reliable Dawson with Fazio
Michael Dawson was a great servant in his 9 years at White Hart Lane and in 2014 he saw his tenure end at Spurs.
Having been a solid performer for the North Londoners they needed to act fast to replace the experience defender.
They did that in the form of Federico Fazio who arrived having just won the Europa League with Sevilla.
Whilst hope was high amongst the Tottenham fans in the Football Transfer Tavern – Fazio’s arrival in London was nothing short of a disaster.
He completely failed to adapt to the Premier League – and he was near-enough forced out of the club this summer.
A nightmare signing.
