Tottenham are in the position of needing to strengthen their defence this summer.
The club are facing a battle to keep hold of Toby Alderweiereld. The North London side have resisted, placing a £75m price tag on the Belgian centre-back, but it feels like his exit is perhaps inevitable. The club have to strengthen to keep up with the big-spending of clubs like rivals Arsenal, and Liverpool this summer.
The White Hart Lane outfit, returning home this year, feel like they are just a couple of quality additions from finally achieving silverware. They have seemingly knocked on the door of something special for many seasons now, led by talisman Harry Kane.
Mauricio Pochetinno plays open, attacking football. However, the Argentine knows he can only do this because of his excellent back line, who are experienced, and can drive the team forward with their ability on the ball. In the last few seasons, Spurs have arguably had the best centre-back pairing in the Premier League.
With that in mind, here are three suggested defenders who could really reinforce the Spurs back line…
Jerome Boateng is vastly experienced, and crucially for Spurs, has experience of winning trophies.
After leaving Manchester City, he has had a trophy-laden time in Bavaria with Bayern Munich, who have swept away all competition before them in the Bundesliga.
A big, powerful centre-back, the German international would be quite a reinforcement for Tottenham, and establish themselves as a big-hitter in the Premier League transfer wise.
Bayern Munich have said they will listen to offers for the 29-year-old.
Harry Maguire had an excellent World Cup for England, and was one of England’s star performers.
In many ways, he is a classic Pochetinno defender. He can surge forward with the ball and pick a pass, and is one of the most composed defenders in the Premier League. Maguire has such good positioning that rarely will you see him go to ground. He is a master of modern-day defending, and an excellent player with the ball at his feet.
He will also win aerial-duels and command the back. As he showed in an England shirt, he is a real threat from set-pieces.
Another English centre-back, James Tarkowski would be a solid reinforcement for Tottenham Hotspur.
He was a key player in a Burnley side which defied the odds and finished 7th, giving them a place in the Europa League. He is valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt.
His performances in a Claret shirt were so good he earnt himself an England call-up, but missed out on being in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man squad.
