There were few positives to come out of Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Norwich last weekend, but one pleasing aspect was seeing Craig Bellamy score his first goal since his return to Anfield on transfer deadline day.
In a game which highlighted Liverpool’s occasional wastefulness in front of goal, Bellamy (albeit with the help of a deflection) was the one player who managed to find a way past the outstanding Canaries ‘keeper John Ruddy.
It was only Bellamy’s second start since re-signing for the club, having also scored in the other, in the 2-1 victory at Brighton in the League Cup. With other striking options such as Dirk Kuyt and Andy Carroll currently misfiring, there is a strong case for Bellamy to be included in the starting line-up on a more regular basis.
Luis Suarez is the only Reds player with more than one league goal so far during the current campaign, and while he continues to score goals at a respectable rate, he could do with a hand; someone who will share the goalscoring burden with him and take some of the pressure off.
Whether Bellamy is that man remains to be seen. After all, he is 32 years old now, and has only just returned to the Premier League after a season in the Championship with Cardiff City. But let’s not forget that he was in sparkling form for Manchester City in 2009/10, scoring ten league goals including braces away to both Manchester United and Chelsea.
