The punters at the Football Transfer Tavern have been watching Chelsea closely this season, looking to see if they manage to get to their best after the poor campaign last season.

Looking back at one of Chelsea’s best seasons in recent history has caused the conversation at the bar to turn to Chelsea’s best players in the last ten years.

Stamford Bridge have seen some great teams and individuals in the last 10 years, after Roman Abramovich’s investment started to pay off.

Chelsea’s stars have come in different shapes and sizes, there has been big money signings and academy graduates, slick dribblers and die hard defenders.

The Tavern’s punters have been discussing who is the best of the best.

GOALKEEPER- Petr Cech

He may have been edged out by Thibaut Courtois, but there is no doubt that Petr Cech is the best goalkeeper that Chelsea have had in the last 10 years and possibly in the club’s history.

The Czech Republic international helped Chelsea win 15 trophies in 11 years with the club, and due to the quality of service he gave them, Mourinho allowed him to choose the team that he would join next, something he would not normally do for quality players.

RIGHT BACK- Paulo Ferreira

Paulo Ferreira was a very reliable player for Chelsea and was a key part of a team that won a lot of trophies, including the Champions League and Europa League.

He was both solid defensively and very good technically; his delivery into the box was brilliant and with players like Didier Drogba in the side side he had some great targets to aim at.

He was one of the most under-appreciated Chelsea players of the time.

CENTRE BACK- John Terry (C)

One of the best captains Chelsea has had, John Terry has led by example for years and every manager that has come in, has seen the skipper as an important player in the changing room.

However it is not just his leadership that has kept him in the side for so long, he is a brilliant defender and is dominant both in the tackle and in the air.

He also scores a lot of goals for a defender and overall has scored 40 league goals for the club.

CENTRE BACK- Ricardo Carvalho

John Terry has had a lot of centre back partners and Ricardo Carvalho is arguably the best of the lot.

The pair were probably the best partnership in the Premier League at the time and Carvalho was very hard to beat. The Portuguese international also had a touch of class about the way he played and was capable of some incredible goals.

The fact that he played a part in Portugal’s Euro winning team at the age of 38 says a lot about him as a player.

LEFT BACK- Ashley Cole

After joining from Arsenal it was thought that Ashley Cole would have a hard time getting into the good books of Chelsea supporters.

However his performances made him a popular man at Stamford Bridge very quickly.

He was dangerous going forward and also worked well defensively, which made him a very useful player for any manager that he played under.

He is one of few players to get the honour of getting over 100 caps for England.

RIGHT WINGER – Joe Cole

Joe Cole was a player that was capable of getting Chelsea fans on the edge of their seats at any moment.

He used his skill, dribbling abilities and quality end product to help Chelsea win the Premier League and a host of other competitions.

One of his biggest goals for the club came in a 3-0 win against Manchester United, which secured the league title for Chelsea. H

e had to fight for his place at times, with the likes of Damien Duff and Arjen Robben in the side, but any Chelsea supporter will remember him as a quality player.

CENTRE MIDFIELDER – Claude Makelele

He was so good that he had a role named after him. Makelele was one of the most reliable players that any manager could want in their team.

He rarely went upfield but was brilliant at breaking down opposition play and getting the team moving forward.

In recent times N’Golo Kante has been brought in to attempt to replicate what Makelele gave the team, but even he will struggle to do that.

CENTRE MIDFIELDER – Frank Lampard

For a player to score almost 150 Premier League goals with one club is an incredible achievement, especially for a midfielder.

Frank Lampard did just that while at Chelsea and became a cult hero at Stamford Bridge.

He will go down as one of the club’s greats as he provided the fans of the London club with some of their best memories.

Although he also gave them one of their most heartbreaking moments, when he scored for Manchester City against the Blues after being sold.

LEFT WINGER – Eden Hazard

Eden Hazard was off form last season, like the rest of the Chelsea team, but he has shown that when he plays well he is unstoppable.

In the 2014/15 season the Blues effortlessly strolled to the Premier League title and the Belgian was the standout performer in that side as he scored 19 goals and lit up Stamford Bridge.

This season he has shown glimpses of what he is capable of, but if he gets back to his best then he could fire Chelsea back towards the top of the league.

STRIKER- Didier Drogba

No defender in world football would have felt anywhere near comfortable when they were playing against Didier Drogba at his best.

The Ivorian striker has scored some of Chelsea’s most iconic goals against the likes of Bayern Munich and Arsenal.

He joined Chelsea as a relative unknown but left as a club legend regarded as one of the world’s best strikers in world football at the time.

STRIKER – Diego Costa

He may be one of the most hated players in the Premier League at the moment, but on his day Diego Costa is one of the deadliest strikers in the Premier League.

Opposing defenders always have to focus on him, which helps give his team mates space and thanks to his physical and technical ability he is still able to cause danger despite the added attention.

The Spaniard had a blip in his second year at Chelsea after an incredible first season but he is back now and is currently the top scorer in the Premier League.
