Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping to put last season’s disappointment behind them and return to the top half of the Premier League.
The Saints endured a dismal 2017/18 campaign where they narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship. Ex-Stoke boss Mark Hughes guided them to safety on the final day of the season and impressed the Southampton brass enough to earn the chance to rebuild the club. With the transfer window open, the hard work starts now.
Attack will be an area of concern for the Welshman, a lack of goals seriously hurt their chances. Charlie Austin and Dusan Tadic topped the scoring charts with just seven goals each. Since Sadio Mane’s departure to Liverpool, the Saints forward line has looked flat – they need a new winger to light up St. Marys.
The perfect solution could be Gent forward – Moses Simon. Valued at £5.4m by Transfermarkt, the 22-year-old was expected to star for Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup before an injury forced him out of the tournament. He made 22 appearances in the Belgian Pro League last season, scoring five and creating two.
Targeted by Liverpool earlier in the transfer window, he would be an excellent signing for Hughes. With blistering pace, Simon loves to beat a man and cut inside. Predominantly a left winger, the youngster is also capable of playing on the right or as the central striker. He would add another dimension to the Saints forward line.
With only one year remaining on his contract, he could be available for as little as £10m. Southampton need to steal a march on their Premier League rivals and sign him up before it’s too late.
