If there’s one thing our Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern want for Christmas more than anything else it’s for the Reds to get a left back in January.

Of course, that would mean that they’d have to wait at least a week for them to get the gift they want after 25th December but logistics aside you get the gist.

It makes sense, too, as the Reds have been playing James Milner there out of position and whilst he has done a good job, it’s not the typical behaviour of champions to bodge things together.

The Anfield club are well in the title race but the general feeling is they need to do some business in January first before they can win it.

That’s why the report in The Mirror claiming the Reds are looking at Sead Kolasinac has been welcomed so warmly here in the Transfer Tavern and it’s also got our landlord thinking, what will their defence look like if he signs?

Fortunately, he’s wrote it down for your perusal…

 RB: Nathaniel Clyne

When you think about it, there’s very few right backs available that can do a better job than Clyne.

Whilst the likes of Dani Carvajal and Hector Bellerin may be better, in terms of players the Reds could actually buy the Englishman tops them all and is as solid as they come. Crucially, for a team as cavalier as the Anfield side, he balances defence and attack well meaning he at least, compared to some of his team-mates, very rarely gets caught out of position.

 CB: Dejan Lovren

Last weekend against Bournemouth showed us all here in the Transfer Tavern that Lovren is the weaker centre back of the two regular Liverpool starters.

Without Joel Matip he needed to lead by example alongside Lucas Leiva and instead was left wanting leaving the Reds in trouble. He’s looked better this season though, alongside the former Schalke man, and so maybe that form will eventually become universal – with or without Matip.

The Reds fans here in the Transfer Tavern have been very effusive over this man since he signed.

To be fair to them he’s been class and reads the game as well as any centre half around at the moment. He is always calm at the back, physically strong and the club looks so much better with him around. As long as he stays fit for most of this season at least, the club have a chance at the title.

 LB: Sead Kolasinac

Here’s where Kolasinac fits in and you have to say the defence already looks more balanced.

Whilst Milner has done a good job he should be being utilised in midfield more instead of in a completely unknown position and that would benefit the Reds’ title challenge a great deal. The current Schalke man would be able to give the club a more natural width, too, and so things would surely shore up at the back thereafter.
