Our Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern were not too annoyed by what they saw against Southampton on Saturday in the latest round of Premier League fixtures.
Yes, the Reds should have won the game and had plenty of chances to but it was the way the Anfield side kept a clean sheet away from home against a good Saints team, that left their fans here by the bar feeling optimistic about the rest of the season.
Whilst the attack will return to its best in the near future many have wondered if the back line is good enough to help win the league, but on that performance the answer might just be yes.
There’s rumours, too, that the Reds will look to sign Virgil Van Dijk this January and our landlord reckons that this could be how their defence looks if he joins…
GK: Loris Karius
The German ‘keeper has done pretty well so far this season and looks firmly set as the Reds number one.
An injury kept him out of the start of the season but as soon as he had recovered from that he was in the side at the cost of Simon Mignolet, highlighting Jurgen Klopp’s preference.
He should only get better, too, given his age and that will please the Anfield faithful.
LB: Sam McQueen
Another Southampton player to be linked with the Reds is the youngster Sam McQueen who impressed for the Saints when needed earlier this season.
The south coast club had a bit of an issue at left back with both Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett injured but McQueen stepped in and excelled, to the point that the Reds seem to want him.
The club needs a left back and the youngster could be the answer.
CB: Joel Matip
The former Schalke defender has become a bit of an instant hit with our Reds fans here in the Transfer Tavern as well as the ones around the country.
He reads the game very well and is a calm and assured player at the back, something the Reds needed for such a long time.
He’s hardly put a foot wrong so far this season and could form a formidable partnership with Van Dijk.
CB: Virgil Van Dijk
The former Celtic man would replace Dejan Lovren as the man to bring the ball out of the defence and start playing.
Whilst Matip can do that, Van Dijk is the better one to ask and has plenty of pace and power to handle any Premier League attacker.
He’s arguably been the best centre half in the division this season and the Reds would do very well to get him in in the January window.
RB: Nathaniel Clyne
Another former Southampton player to grace the Anfield turf, Nathaniel Clyne has been the ultimate professional since joining the Reds.
He is one of the most consistent players in the team and very rarely puts a foot wrong at the back whilst he can fly forward and help with the Reds potent attack.
He reads the game impeccably well and there’s no way he won’t be in the side for the seasons to come.
